Interviewing GKM of LOTUG family.. #2 Mixtape is OUT!!!

#2 is what you should be about right now if you know your local crafts and you know your music, The disc is released and available at the retail price of R30 per disc contact kojthegorilla@gmail.com  for yours.
Our creative industry keeps pumping in that new school fabric, and these guys right here are the phresh talent to look out for when scouting new music.

But you know us, we're that generation that needs to feel the sound before we show our pledge of support to the project by buying a disc and owning a physical copy for future reference on that collectors item tip. Project also available on soundcloud at Guerilla King Music #2 Mixtape

This is that interview giving you an inside scoop on the people behind the sound that GKM is coming with, NutsAboutRap speaks to GKM  (consisting of Deav Martian, Daddy and Swish 8-8).
Just in-case GKM is new to you, We'll first profile and write about their music up on soundcloud together with the vids they've got on youtube so that you get introduced to this new sound before we jump into that interview dissecting the creative process behind this combination of emcees and producers. Enjoy!!

(soundcloud) Falling apart - 07. Daev Martian, Daddy &Deeno Dee
What's enough to steal your heart instantly about the composition of this jam?....those lyrics " oh shit, I'm falling apart now/ the swag rap days are gone it's all about heart now" is enough to make you want to hear what these guys have got to say coz now you know for sure that these are no chancers. You are dealing with people who are passionate about their craft and the level of respect you get from that production is undeniable.

What's not to appreciate in a well put together project boasting carefully crafted lyricism, quality compositions and production?

What is worth respecting about GKM is the level of commitment that went into their project, head up straight to their website to watch the promo video they whipped up for #2. www.guerillakingmusic.com

Branding game is Nutz!! it's true that you've got to be a head yourself to know how to reach out to and communicate to other heads no matter what product or service you selling.

Now straight into that interview:

1.) @NutsAboutRap
For people who have never heard of GKM, who are you guys and what are you about as a collective of artists?

@GKM:
Initially an events company but more focused on music now...Just a bunch of artists who got together and related with each other in that aspect (musically) ... Because of this we came up with the label ... as a collective we're out to push and promote independence and self thought... LOTUG is just events now... we're GKM (Daev Martian)

2.) @NutsAboutRap:
How did you guys form? What is the history behind the collaborative effort that is GKM?

@GKM:
We're different in that we don't need each other to be creative. Our coming together as a group is to help each other on facets of the industry we might be weaker at as individuals. We came together at ASE.

3.) @NutsAboutRap:
How would you describe your sound, your brand and trademark to a new audience?

@GKM:
Well you cant give one kind of definition because there are different elements from each artists and producer ... when I do a song with dad it wont be the same as when i do one with Deeno or MelloBoi or Swish ... so its like a lucky packet. (Daev Martian)

4.) @NutsAboutRap:
Can we get a basic lowdown on the individual contributors in this specific project?

@GKM:
We are a new indie record label called Guerilla King Music... we have quite a few rappers in the team whom are Daev Martian, Daddy, Sly T, DeenoDee, Thomas Hazardous and Space G. We get beats from within the team from myself, Daev Martian, MelloBoi and DeenoDee and sometimes Daddy coz he makes his own beats. Suspect Dj's for the homies when they perform. We got Tre who does our artworks and we have our own mixing engineer (Zain and Reo) and mastering engineer (SLT Productions) too so we basically have created a team of people we need to move forward. (Swish 8-8)

 5.) @NutsAboutRap:
The scene has changed so much over the years, the music industry is saturated with all sorts of styles and kinds... what sets your sound apart from what is already out there?

@GKM:
The fact that we're doing everything ourselves... we've even set our own standard within the team ... also the element of surprise because you never really know what comes from anyone within. A lot of artists try too hard to please the wrong people .... which is just too dishonest
(Daev Martian)

6.) @NutsAboutRap:
What can we expect from lotug in the near future?

@GKM:
What you can expect from LOTUG in the future is: music. A better standard of music compared to local standards and a fresher, unique product. Events/Activations that cater not only to launching in-house products but creating a platform for like minded creatives to showcase their talents and creations. Merchandise that is new, innovative and distinctly unique. And some swag.

7.) @NutsAboutRap:
Tell us more about #2 and exactly why kats should go out and get this project.. what can we expect?

@GKM:
 #2 is 5 months worth of music and cover designing from GKM collective, the compilation serves as a roller coast experience of great artistry and musical vibes, due to its mixture of fresh lyrics & head-bopping production. The producers have illustrated different ways in which they express their art and this is what makes the tape so versatile in allowing every listener to relate to the different sides and dimensions of the music. (Swish 8-8 and Daev Martian)

8.) @NutsAboutRap:
What do you guys feel you stand for or represent in your craft and how you present  your product to your audience?

@GKM:
Just out to push honesty and independence yo... we just feel that people are too dependent on majors and big companies ... its not only about the music industry because this applies to all other industries...i don't wanna call it rebellion its more like "Self Love".
(Daev Martian)

Campus Cypher videos

This semester has been an eventful one. NutsAboutRap in collaboration with MovingVoices presented WORDent. Cyphers and poetry sessions on campus!!

What originally started as UKZN Weekend media cyphas, eventually developed into WORDent poetry and cypher sessions. Started out as something small and ended up all the excitement on Fridays, video links collected below.

That was the first random session... Which later developed into a refreshing way to hang out and spend Friday afternoons. We came in with our Digital Arts cameras and decided to film the sessions and the rest was history.

The sessions themselves spawned a lot of ideas about establishing such entertainment structures within the campus lifestyle, but none of us were dedicated enough to see all the necessary establishing efforts through - so those beginning strolls were wiped out and we ended up just content with these random vids. Personally nobody was ready to go in and put in all the work for that project on their own when other kats gonna be benefiting from it the same and nobodies getting paid. F that, If the establishing process wasn't going to be a joint effort like it was meant to.. might as well not get started on it at all, who is going to let other kats weight rest on their shoulders?
we ended up just deciding that videos were enough!

So we got together with Siya and Njabulo and revamped the project into WORD entertainment videos, and so the story continues as media portfolio for 3 and every bodie's happy...
see the freshly edited clip links provided below.

Special shout out to Njabulo, who invested sleepless nights sweating over the quality of the intro's logo and overall project presentation. Shout out to Siya as well for whipping up of a dope poster for the sessions.. we in this!!
